Many are trying to free the iPhone from the AT&T network.

First there was the guy who managed to do this by hacking the hardware, then sold the iPhone for a Nissan 350Z and 3 8GB iPhones (nice swap!).

Video here: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=tvJ1RGlxe8Q and his Blog is here: http://iphonejtag.blogspot.com/

Next the website http://www.iphonesimfree.com was acquired before it had even launched its fully software based unlock!

More here that aims to prove it works and is not a hoax:
http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/24/iphone-unlocked-atandt-loses-iphone-exclusivity-august-24-2007/

Interesting ongoing saga regarding attempted theft of another piece of software code for unlocking iPhones: http://www.tuaw.com/2007/09/12/the-real-story-behind-the-iphone-unlock-gui-drama/

Looks like this will eventually be released for free.

All this does not bode well for any UK network who want to have an iPhone monopoly when the device finally reaches the UK.

I want to congratulate all the companies that are copying and produce iClones in large numbers to counter the iPhone monopoly. I am an Apple lover. I learned to use computer from the first Apple series which had a user friendly GUI long before the Windows. However, Apple myopic marketing strategies lost to the Windows, which I would say was and continue to be inferior to Apple GUI. But Windows won the market, the extent of making Bill Gates, the co-founder of Apple a billionaire now, because of poor marketing strategies of Apple. I thought Apple would learn from their past marketing mistakes and accordingly a follow the Bill Gates marketing strategies. They have not. New Apples continue to be a monopoly of the Apple Company. Their now most popular product is confined to a few handful providers (AT & T); making the iPhone technology and beauty to handful individuals in the US. This strategy has opened the door to other to pirate the technology and capitalize on the market, which Apple could have harnessed if they had good marketing strategies. Consequently, they have now to share market with the iClones. Poor Steve Job, when will you grow up to learn from your past mistakes? Congratulation to all iClones makers for capitalizing on the market created but left empty by the iPhone. I would like to get one of your clones as living in a developing country I am unable to access the iPhone which is currently restricted to the American market and at worst to AT & T only, as the provider.
